Paimio Arm Chair by Alvar Aalto

Posted under Uncategorized

Aalto’s intriguing Model Paimio arm chair can be found in numerous museums including the Museum of Modern Art. The frame is laminated birch bent into a closed curve with solid birch cross-rails. The seat is molded from one piece of birch plywood. The springy plywood fixed on a closed frame was Aalto’s 1931 brainstorm for making a wooden chair “soft”.

His thought in positioning for the sun, selection of soothing materials which reduced Hospital “clatter” noise made a cheerful environment for both staff and patients.
He continued those philosophies to design the furniture, especially the Paimio Arm Chair. The TB patient’s breathing was considered with the 110 degree angle of the chair back, the front curve of the arm made it easy to grip for getting in and out of.
The timber surface was easily cleaned. The use of timber creating warmth negated the coldness of institutions. The Paimio Chair is constructed from both two dimensional molded plywood and laminated timber. The curves are made by clamping layers of veneer and glue over a form to achieve the desired curved shapes.
A straight laminated timber crossbar in the upper back stabilized the framework. The continuous curves of the chair seat and back resembled a coil spring – this provided extra resilience to the plywood design.
There were air vents in the upper part of the chair lent itself to the shape of a scroll – the Paimio Chair was often referred to as the Scroll Chair.

Womb Ottoman-Riva Leather

Posted under Uncategorized

Upholstered in Spinneybeck Riva leather, which is suitable for contract use.
This is a fully licensed classic.
When Florence Knoll challenged Finnish-born architect and designer Eero Saarinen in 1948 to create a chair that she could curl up in, she had found an apt candidate for the task. The Womb Chair’s enveloping, lap-like form continues to be one of the most iconic and recognized representations of mid-century Scandinavian organic modernism. In fact, ask most designers and architects what lounge chair design they covet and they’ll promptly tell you it’s the Womb Chair. By applying foam molded over a fiberglass shell, Saarinen was able to create a single-piece form that perfectly facilitated a relaxed sitting posture and a sublime feeling of security. Additional seat and back cushions and the coordinating Womb Ottoman provide a further degree of lavish comfort. The slender steel rod base is chrome-plated using a multiple step process that results in a flawlessly polished mirror finish. Upholstered in Riva leather, Spinneybeck’s first full-aniline-dyed leather that is suitable for contract applications. Riva combines the rich hand of untreated leather with superior stain and water resistance. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A.

Platner Armchair-Mohair by Warren Platner

Posted under Uncategorized

This is a fully licensed classic.
Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified.
If you combined the work of Raymond Loewy, I.M. Pei and Eero Saarinen, the result might very well look like the Platner Collection (1966). Warren Platner worked with all three of the industrial and organic design giants before turning his attention to steel wire furniture, for which he devised the structure and production method. Requiring as many as 1,000 welds and crafted out of wire and space, the Armchair, available in a range of upholstery options, demonstrates Platner’s belief that there is room in modernism “for the kind of decorative, gentle, graceful design that appeared in a period style like Louis XV.” Constructed of metal components that are finished in bright nickel with a clear lacquer protective coating, the chair features a clear plastic extrusion ring surrounding the base to protect floors. The Platner Collection is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified for low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in Italy.
